How does one control which SN is used to chat?

I have been trying to figure out this for a long time, but to no avail. Hopefully someone here will be able to help up.

Right now I have three accounts in Adium:
1) AIM account
2) my @mac account
3) Google Talk

All services are set to sign on at startup. For the AIM and @mac accounts, the buddy lists are synchronized (I basically cloned my AIM onto my @mac).

Now here is my problem. When I try to chat with anyone who is on my AIM buddy list, it will always use my @mac SN. Is there any way to change the default SN that my IMs come from? Or are there alternative solutions? Is my only solution to either sign onto either AIM or @mac at one time?

If you initiate contact, then before you send a message there will be a drop down giving you the possibilities of which screennames are available to send from.

Even if you didn't initiate contact, there should be a drop-down menu at the top of the message window, letting you choose which account to use. (Note: this only appears when you have a given buddy on *more than one* of your accounts)

For some strange reason I cannot locate this drop-down. It should be here by all means, but it is not. I have Adium 0.89.1.

When I open a chat window (before or after contact), it is not an option on the top toolbar (nor is it available in customize toolbar for inserting into the toolbar).

Am I really that blind or am I looking in the wrong place?

Okay, here's a screenshot showing where the dropdown should be:

If that doesn't appear, then the contact that you are trying to IM is not on the buddy list of more than one of your accounts

Thanks. Going through some of the other people on my buddy list does indeed invoke the drop down.

What is weird is that all my SNs are shown as been under both my .Mac and AIM accounts (when you go to get info for a SN and accounts tab). But the dropdown appears only for some. Do you know what could be causing this?

Still having this problem. I have signed on seperately to my AIM and then seperately to my .Mac SNs and the buddy lists are identical.

However, I still do not have drop down selection for some SNs that are on both lists.

Are you connected on both accounts?

Yep. Connected on both accounts. Identical buddy lists (checked by logging into each seperately). But drop down only available for some SNs and not others. This is frustrating.

Well I finally figured out what sets apart some SNs from others. I get the dropdown if I have multiple SNs for a contact, but no dropdown if I only have one SN for a contact. Basically, I can choose which one of my SNs to IM from ONLY to contacts that have multiple SNs.

Can someone please tell me if this is the intended behavior or some sort of bug? This has been bugging for a week now.

I just double checked, and that is not the behavior, let alone the intended behavior. Even if you only have one screenname for a contact, there will be a From drop down if you have two accounts that could validly send a message to said contact.

Does anyone have a suggestion of how I can troubleshoot this "unintended behavior"? I'd like to start with something short of a complete uninstall/reinstall.
