Adium and Web Cams

I would like to view other people's cams while chatting with YIM. From what I gathered by searching this forum I needed to download aMSN...but upon doing that, I get the impression this is an entirely different entity, and requires a separate username, etc.
I am rather confused, so I'm sure I am very wrong on these assumptions.
All I would like to know is...while using Adium, chatting through a Yahoo Instant Messanger username, how can I view another user's webcam? (I will soon be getting one of my own as well...which will be another dilemma)
I am just sick of having to sign on using YIM, and with a Mac, there are no conversation archives...which truly irk me. I LOVE Adium, but they complain they cannot send files or share cams.
Is there an easy solution?

There is no support to send or receive video connection in Adium. For more information please read the following.
http://www.adiumx.com/blog/archives/200 ... rchive.php (specifically the June 11'th entry). There is also an article on the trac wiki but trac is down at the moment.

Thanks for your help. I like how Adium archives the conversations...I believe what I will do is sign in on Yahoo under an entirely different user, and chat while on Adium...having the cam going on under the other user.
Problem solved...and I very much appreciate all that Adium does do!

This is what I do.

I'm just hoping and praying that iChat gets MSN support with Leopard. I know its highly unlikley but it seems the only decent IM app that want to the video. aMSN isn't very good imo, Adium is perfect apart from no-one wanting to work on video

Aside from the three or so people working on video on various protocols, you mean?
I suspect what you really meant was no one
succeeding at working on video, so far.

yeah

OK, but it's just that we never actually SEE anything being done, which dissapoints a lot of people (including me!

)
EDIT: Is there people working on it?
http://gaim-vv.sourceforge.net/ was last updated on 2005, and from the Gaim site:
Will you support features such as voice chat, internet phones, or video chat?
In the short term we have no plans to work on or attempt to integrate patches in these areas. However, one of our developers has created Gaim-vv, a "fork" of Gaim, which will be merged into gaim when a decent subset of voice and video functionality is implemented and stable. Having a separate sourceforge project allows people interested in such features greater access to development while not clogging the main thrust of gaim towards text instant messages.
Obviously i'm not up to date on this, just asking.

Could Adium be made to act as a front end for something like iChat?

No, we're not going to do that.

That's a shame. Adium has the nicest user interface of any messenger I have used. iChat is nowhere near as slick. But my family and several friends have camera enabled macs and use iChatAV and many others use sip based VOIP, so I'm finding myself using Adium less and less unfortunately.
If Adium could use iChat (or yahoo even) as a plugin (or via a plugin) they could all use the nice UI.

Unfortunately that's not feasible in 10.4; the reverse engineering required would be way too much. It's possible the frameworks will be more accessible in 10.5... but we'd prefer to see effort go to a direct implementation rather than a hack to use another program.

No such luck.

These applications aren't designed to be used in a such a fashion and have to be compromised to achieve even a fraction of what you'd want. Commercial entities have no reason to freely expose their IP that costs millions and gives them a competitive edge.
