Jabber setup in 0.89.1 and 1.0: weird behavior

Post by meandcat »

the huge german freemail providers web.de and gmx just startet beta testing their own xmpp based instant messengers. i really appreciate their decision to use xmpp because of the openness. suddenly there are millions of potential new jabber users. note that they tied their xmpp server to their mailboxes in the same way google did: you just use your e-mail adress as jabber id.
i played around a little with Adium and the new jabber servers and recognized the following behaviour:
setting up an web.de account in Adium 1.0 just requires typing in the e-mail adress/ jabber id and password. Adium then connects properly.
typing in the exact same information in Adium 0.89.1 doesn't work. Adium tries to connect like forever but nothing happens. i have to manually specify the login server as "gmx.net" (the two companys belong together and it seems they use the same server) and make it use TLS. then it works fine with version 0.89.1.

i just wonder why Adium 1.0 doesn't require the extra information. i should think the required details depend on the server Adium tries to connect to and that doesn't change no matter which client i use. or is the new libgaim xmpp plugin so advanced that it automatically finds out how to connect to the server?

I don't think that it's "so advanced", maybe we just have tls turned on by default?

okay, that might be. but that doesn't explain why i have to manually specify a different login server in 0.89 while the default one works in 1.0

This is absolutely correct.
