Show thumbnails for links to images. What do you think?

Post by KAMiKAZOW »

Fire (another instant messenger) has the feature to display a thumbnail, if a link to an image is sent. It looks like this: http://trac.adiumx.com/attachment/ticke ... format=raw
I find that very handy. Unfortunately Tick doesn't seem to "get it" and asks for feedback. Since almost nobody reads Trac tickets, I just redirect the question to the forum.
Would you like to see that feature in a future version of Adium X?
The Trac ticket can be found at http://trac.adiumx.com/ticket/5442

Plenty of people read trac. I'd like to keep the conversation in one place to be honest, it makes more sense to keep it on trac since that's where this was started.

Trac is also the domain of the developers, so if you'd like to see something implemented that's where it should play out.
Try my software!

#define ADIUMX pimp //by me
#define QUESTION ((2b) || (!2b))
Have you hugged a programmer today?

Also, trying to play other users against the developers is not a very good way to get something you would like to see included.

I'm not playing against a developer. That ticket has been flagged with "needs user feedback" and not "needs dev review". I just want to make sure that as many regular users as possible know about this. That's just basic democracy. If most others say that they don't like that feature, then OK.

Suggestions are accepted and reviewed, possibly implemented after discussion, however software, even free open source software, is not a democracy.

The thing I'm working on at the moment will likely allow this feature to be implemented in message styles, btw.

Needs User Feedback is meant to get feedback from the person who filed the ticket. Normally the user.

i.e. you.

Ah, OK. Then I missunderstood the term user feedback. Sorry for that.

No worries, it isn't very clear in this instance :)

I see more and more websites using that Snap feature, which previews linked sites in a tooltip like window when mousing over the link. While i sometimes find it annoying i think it could be handy to have it in instant messages.
Since Adium's message styles are rendered by WebKit, wouldn't it be easy to create a message style using the snap code?

Yes it would. The only difficulty would be including the custom javascript, which is really not that difficult (and is what I was referring to above when I mentioned I was working on something that would make it easier). :)
