Just out of the blue (and a few moments after adding a .Mac buddy, number 102), I logged on and 80 errors popped up saying that it could not add buddy xyz to the list. And now those names are off the server... very mysterious and sad...
any suggestions?

on a side note, as people are IMing me, who are not in my buddy list, the message window recognizes their alias name that I had stored when I did have all my buddies.
This leads me to believe that somehow, Adium knows that buddy xyz is name xyz, despite the fact that buddy xyz isnt on my buddy list. Which makes me believe that that info is stored locally somewhere.
and ideas? please do help!

Contacts each get their own file in ~/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0/Users/Default/ByObject/ for contact-specific preferences such as alias (although aliases may also come from the server or address book)

is there anyway to do a mass add from those stored files?

it might be a cool little app/script in case people do have detrimental screen name losses, to be able to pull those names from these files.
by the way adam, in case I do have to bite the bullet and do it manually, thanks for the info! at least they arent all lost.

Omigosh! That's horrific!
It sounds similar to a bug the developers believed they had fixed quite a long time ago.

I have the same issue, lots of contacts (MSN) have disappeared. They are listed in that ByObject Folder, but how can i add them back to the contact list?
This issue seemed to happen when i tried to move a lot of contacts into a different group - I got lots of boxes come up, and i clicked yes to each, then it happened again, so i clicked no. After that these contacts are missing
Is there a way to get these picked up by Adium into the contact list from the ByObject folder?
Thanks

There isn't, besides typing them in manually. The bug causing that yes/no dialog is, we believe, fixed in .8.. answering no to it deleted the contacts from your list. Bad, we know

Just an aside, it's always a good idea to back up important information when you are using beta versions of any software.
I do bi-weekly backups of my buddy list via the official AIM client for Mac, usually.

ok so i added them all again manually, now those boxes are coming up again, saying that the contact is in the Individuals group, but not server ??? Anyway i put yes, so they dont get deleted. Thing is Individual group is not listed man this sucks
Oh and it isnt beta, it is 0.7 i am using.

Well, I got the same problem a few months ago with adium... more than 120 contacts suppressed with on same way... well... it was clean
About the 0.7, you know, if there's an 0, it's because it's a beta
