You apparently missed the "hidden" that was mentioned both in the commit and in this thread. You'll need to set it via the command line.

defaults write com.adiumx.Adiumx AIAlwaysUpdateToBetas -bool YES should do the trick. If not, figure it out from the man page for defaults; I may have the syntax slightly off.
