Viewing Animated Icons and "Extra" Lines

Ok, first off I am fairly new with Adium. And I just joined this forum!
Now for my questions:

1. I know how to add an animated icon to be my icon/avitar. But in the im window it doesn't show that it is animated. It just shows it as a picture. The same with my buddies animated icons. So is there a setting or a download that makes you able to VIEW the animatd icons IN the im window?

2. When you are talking in an im how do you go down a line. Like in AIM for Windows [I am a new Mac user by the way!] you pressed Shift+Enter and a new line under what you just wrote appeared. In Adium if you press Shift+Enter/Return it sends the message. So this is an example of what I am hoping for:
Hey how are you?
Hope things are well.

And I would like them to be like that or with another line between them. I hope you understand what I am trying to ask!
Here is an example of having one line in between the two things [without being sent]:
Hey how are you?

Hope things are well

Oh, by the way I am using a MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Version 10.4.8
I don't know if it makes a difference or not

Animated images can not be viewed in the IM window next to messages; this is by design, because it would be a major speed problem in addition to generally an annoyance. However, if you click and hold on the person's icon in the toolbar at the top of the window, it'll show animated.

Option-enter is the OS X standard way of inserting a new line; this always works. You can also configure enter/return as you want in the General preferences.
