Displaying current status

Hi there,

I've just come over to Adium from Fire, very smooth transition - good job! There's one thing I miss from Fire however. Are there currently any plans to display the current online status of your accounts in the contacts window?

Fire used to have the status of each of your accounts displayed, and then under that the actual contacts lists with their individual status settings. Sometimes you might want to be online with one service but not another, or a service may fail to log in (happens a lot with AIM - dodgy servers) and it's currently a bit hard to spot in Adium.

Thanks for a great product guys!

Mark

Add yourself to your own contact list.

The status menu, file menu and menu bar will all show you per-account status as well.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I've added myself to my own contacts list in a separate 'Status' group which is fine. The only problems with this approach is that if (like me) you have hide offline contacts set, the fake status contact will disappear when you're not connected, rather than displaying 'offline'. Also, as it's a contact rather than an account, you can't double click on it to take the account on/offline or perform other account related operations.

Still this is going to help and is a neat trick. Are there any plans for the future to add Fire-style account items to Adium's contacts list?

Thanks

Mark

Probably not; the standard contact list gives online/offline/status functionality via the status selector, which works well for the connectivity needs of most users (who sign all accounts on or off together).

The angle of dealing with loss of connectivity is a unique one. What is the situation in which you find AIM is not connected when you think that it would be?

It's bizarre to be honest. Sometimes AIM just refuses to sign on. It's not an Adium thing, I had the same problem with Fire and iChat. My ICQ account logs in just fine. Adium's dock icon reports 'logging on' via the spinning cog, so I know somethinig is amiss, which is helpful, but it just sits in the connecting state for ever. Adium eventually times out, which is something Fire never did. Often its the next day before the AIM server lets me log in again.

A simple extension which might help would be to be able to override the 'hide offline users' setting on a per group basis, then I could specify that the status group always shows all its members, hence would always report which of my accounts were online/offline/away etc.

Thanks,

Mark
