I am unsure which instant messenger service different email accounts use - msn, aol, yahoo - all obvious but what about others such as virgin, btconnect etc - how do I know which service to add them to?

Have you searched the pages about Jabber. Since it seems to support many different protocals, maybe they have a mapping table.
