Can't see MSN users on local network

Post by Herb »

My wife and I use Messenger, via Adium 1.04, to communicate upstairs / downstairs. Our friends in the outside world show us as being online, but we show each other as being offline.

I think this started happening when I changed wireless routers. We have a D-Link DIR-655 now.

Any thoughts?

If you say you have changed your router, are you still with your same isp?. Are you dynamic or static ip?. Are both of your computers networked? and do they see one another's ip or connection?. are you both Mac?. or one Mac and the other win?

I have found allot off people have "shared ip's" and this could be an issue, just depends.

Run the networking software within your system, make sure you both have different ip's. just many things to consider.

Other than that, I'm not a networking guru, so maybe I gave you some sort of direction to locate your issue.

Herb, Im not sure your back ground with routers, networking etc. But having a dynamic ip and having a router, is very hard to master. your router sends out a proxy type of ip, beginning with 196 or 192 etc.

Again I'm not sure the issue, just stabbing in the dark. I hang at a open tech support site for a game company all day. The game site has information links, and suggestions on their site and normally I simply copy and paste this info for others to view.

I really can't say what your issue is. But have you tried to add one another in your contact list?. and it still shows as off line?.

Have you tried a direct connection between both of your computers?.. meaning take out the internet and your able to see one another?.. I'm not even sure if We have to log through an Adium main frame to be able to access the Adium service.

I'm prob not making any sense here. If your not able to message to one another but message to the out side Than its between your computer and hers.

I just completed searching for some Information about your router from the d-link site, maybe there is something there that could offer you some help.

Thanks. Your suggestion about a direct connection made me realize I could use Bonjour through Adium. Worked like a charm. We can see each other fine now. No reason to use MSN for the LAN IM.

Wizard, you've solved my problem. Thanks.

Again, having limited knowledge of some of these things, I just offered up ideas I do all day at the other site. Often its just something simply another user has over looked or pertaining to this other site they are to lazy to view the information at the main tech support site. Glad I put you on the right track, seem thats about the only thing I'm good at.
