Hi, I've been browsing through the source and I can't tell if there is a way to fire an event when the contact list focus changes (eg. you select someone in the contacts list).

You can indeed have code respond to the change. Take a look at the Get Info window's controller; the Get Info window changes as the contact list selection changes to show the currently selected contact's info.
