Looks like a 10.5 bug, not an Adium bug.

If you can't be bothered to use a temporary solution, it must not be that much of a problem for you. Thus you likely have the patience to wait for an update to address it.

I'm a big Adium fan. It's awesome, however I'm one of those who isn't able to connect ever since Leopard.
The temporary solution works. Thanks.
Looking forward to a fix. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

yes, the temporary solution works very well, though the connection speed is much slower than usual

The MSN picture changeing that was really cool in Adium where you could fit the pic inside the area doesnt work in Leopard.
I have a feeling we should put this cat down. All these errors in various software arent worth the new gadgets it gives.

Unrelated to this thread; fixed for 1.1.4.

I tried the suggestion you guys gave me in terminal and I still get the same problem.
Adium reffuses to connect, it acts like it doesn't have any data, and i've upgraded to a bunch of different versions and it refuses to work.
The adium support told me I needed to switch to a new account becuase it worked in another account but I don't want to because all my data is in my current account.
I tried uninstalling it, getting rid of adium 2.0, i did everything and nothinb will make it work.
Issue connecting

I was using 1.2 and everything was ok.. when I "updated" to the beta.. I had this same exact problem...

Does it work if you switch back to 1.2? (I ask because the beta of 1.2.1 did not change anything related to MSN connectivity relative to 1.2).

To clarify, 10.5 apparently broke getaddrinfo() with routers that send invalid responses (or forward requests improperly), so for example using your router as a DNS server (192.168.1.1) instead of your ISP's DNS (4.2.2.1) will cause it to sometimes (or always, depending on your router) not work.

I'm not sure it's fair to say that Apple broke getaddrinfo. Rather they updated it to the most recent DNS standard and unfortunately not all DNS servers have been updated or function correctly according to the new standard. So I'd say what's broken is the DNS server(s) not responding to SRV requests. I would agree however that getaddrinfo could have been updated in a way to not cause these types of problems - for example if they not only send an SRV request but they also send an A request at the same time. Maybe the standard prevents that scenario, I'm not sure.

Yes, if I go back to 1.2 it works without the need to add anything to the hosts file...
Sorry that it took me a while to get back to you about that....

MSN only stopped working for me after I transferred my data from my MacBook to my MacBook pro. It doesn't connect on the MBP but works fine on the MB which both share the same router.

I'm at Uni now (where I use a wired connection) and I've begun having this problem again. Adium simply never finishes connecting when it comes to my msn account. Changing the hosts file doesn't fix anything (and why would it if the official Messenger client can connect fine) so I don't think this is entirely Leopard's fault.

Hey,
I have been an Adium user for more than a year, but only today found out that this forum existed when I needed help.
Anyway...
I wiped my computer a couple of days ago (in preparation of getting a new updated MacBook Pro, but Apple didn't do anything so I'm sticking with my PowerBook.) So today I installed Adium 1.2.1.
However, it doesn't connect. I'm using Hotmail. Leopard 10.5.1
All I get is a "Error: Unable to connect" Message. I retyped my username and pass, to make sure. It goes Connecting for a split second before showing Reconnecting - with a countdown.
Adium as worked on Leopard before the wipe. So anyone have any ideas of why its not working now?
Thanks for any information, much appreciated.

Does anyone know where I can get the older version of Adium, not the one that was released a few days ago... that update is causing problems for me to log on using MSN.
THANKS

Over the weekend until yesterday (Monday) morning, I was unable to connect to MSN. Changing the hosts file solved that, but on my home network it was still extremely slow to connect.
At the same time, some friends on PCs running the Microsoft client on the same public network as me also reported problems logging on; AIM was totally impossible; QQ has been impossible for a whilee. Only Gtalk/jabber was usable.
Around midday, in a cafe with a wireless network, it connected fine, though with periodic disconnections-reconnections. On returning home in the evening, all was working well again. So I suspect that the problems of recent days may not all have been down to the Adium upgrade.
