Menu without opening

Post by sdf »

One thing I really like about iChat is that the menu is always available, even when iChat isn't opened. I know the details of this, and I know Apple cheats a little by using private functionality on the menu extra.

Nevertheless, I would love to have an Adium helper application that provided a menu like this (but didn't appear on the dock or in Alt-Tab) that was available even when the main Adium application wasn't open. Is this planned in the future?

It's something we've thought about, but for the moment at least, refactoring all of adium's connection code into a daemon does not seem to have a good effort/reward ratio.

Doing a background app that didn't remain connected while Adium was 'quit' would be much easier, of course, but less useful.

Thanks. This is something that I've been thinking of for a long time ("What exactly is it that makes me prefer iChat to Adium?") but never quite got up the energy to ask about, so I'm very grateful for the quick reply. :)

(Don't mistake the above thought for me thinking it's a priority or anything, heh.)
