Chatting with offline msn contacts

When a (msn) contact appears offline it is possible to chat to them, but if the conversation is left idle for anything longer than about a minute it is not possible to send any more messages to the contact until they speak to you. This can be very frustrating and is not the behaviour of the wlm client for windows, where talking to offline contacts just works no matter how long you leave a conversation. Another complaint is that a conversation with an offline contact cannot be started, the only choice is to send an email, which is not the wlm behaviour. Should I report this as a bug?

LOL, report it as slacking from the developers.

I don't think the developers could be accused of slacking as adium is a gream IM client, but the first issue is probably a bug and the second would be a feature request, however it could be treated as a bug in that it doesn't follow the behaviour of the official client. I was just wanting verification of that. Perhaps complaint was the wrong word.

Both these behaviors are problems with the 'old' version of the MSN protocol. The Windows client is on a newer version, but the code for Adium's MSN connectivity, libpurple, has not been upgraded to that newer version yet. Work on it is in progress, but we don't know when it will be done.

Thanks, that's quite interesting. I noticed that WLM signed in incredibly fast since the last time I used it too, so that's something to look forward to too. Keep up the good work
