Gtalk not connecting...

Post by cmcole101 »

Hi Y'all.

I have never been able to get Gtalk to work using Adium, no matter what version. All other accounts work, MSN - YIM - AIM - ICQ, but not Gtalk, neither the Gtalk nor the Jabber setups. The Gtalk interface works perfectly on my Windows PC, but never on Mac.

I've read through all the posts here which suggest changing the port to 5223, old-SSL; 5222, new-SSL; plain text auth; Resource to Gaim, talk*google*com, gtalk*com, et.al., and all to no avail.

The most confusing is that Gtalk works no problem on Windows, as well as through the browser to mail*google*com.

I'm using Adium 1.2.1 on Mac 10.4.11, but it's not worked on any version of Adium through all versions of Mac Tiger.

Any suggestions?

TIA

What happens instead of it working?

It shows Initializing Stream (25%) ... Connecting until it times out. In previous versions it would time out with an error after a minute or so.

Thanks for your reply. Hope we can work this out.

After updating to 1.2.2, the error when connecting now says, "Error: Socket is not connected", then it waits 5 seconds and displays, "Initializing Stream (25%)" :(

I'm going to submit a bug ticket.

Hi,
there actually is an easy solution to this: go to the account settings for the Google Talk account in Adium, change the port from 5050 to 5223 and check force old SSL encryption. Voila, Google Talk works. I compared the settings to the working iChat settings, that is how I came to the solution. The Adium version I am using here is 1.2.3.

Best regards,
Thomas.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion, Thomas. As I wrote in my original post, none of this has worked for me. I have opened a bug ticket with the developers, and we have been working together in hopes of resolving this issue.

A curious question, though. Where did you see the port 5050 setting? I've not seen this one before. All defaults to Google Talk in Adium that I've ever seen always point to 5222.

Try changing the port to 443.

It surely got farther with port 443 than any previous settings, but still errors out. I'm attaching the debug log. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Addendum: This site won't allow me attach a file. I keep getting "The extension log is not allowed." error each time I attempt it. I've changed the extension to txt, and I've removed the extension and always there's an error to upload. Is there another way I can get this error log to you?

Please email it to us then. We'll see what's up with the file uploading ASAP.

I've emailed 2008-05-15.txt to feedback@adiumx.com. Please let me know if you still don't receive it and I'll resend. Thanks.

HOLY COW!! It's connected for the VERY first time!! Let's see if I can tell you what settings I've fiddled with to get the Gtalk to connect.

First, my MSN accounts dropped offline last night and wouldn't come back. I opened MSN Messenger for Mac 7.0 and couldn't get a login, but then M:Mac 7.0 has never connected. Tried aMSN also with no connectivity, but aMSN has worked flawlessly in the past. At this point I suspected it was MSN having troubles and went to bed.

When I awoke this morning I was still unable to get MSN to connect with Adium, but YIM & AIM were connected without issue. I did further research by accessing webmessenger.msn.com to see if I was able to gain access, to which I was. Next I tried aMSN and it was also able to connect, but still no Adium. Hmmm... Curiouser and Curiouser!!

Now I started playing around with the MSN settings in Adium until eventually I had to select in the Options tab "Connect via HTTP", then change the settings in Proxy to "Connect using proxy", Type "HTTP", and then point it to proxy 127.0.0.1:8080 because I use Authoxy to communicate with our proxy server. BING!! Both of my MSN accounts came online. Now previously I could NEVER get Adium to connect through the HTTP method. Another.. HMMMM!!

With this strangeness I decided to try Gtalk once again using the port 443 as was just suggested. No connection. I changed the Security under Options tab from "Require SSL/TLS" to "Force old-style SSL" and in Proxy changed the settings to "Connect using proxy", Type "HTTP", and Proxy "127.0.0.1" and EUREKA!! For the very first time it connected!

Mind you I've done ALL of these steps in multiple combinations without any success. I'm almost inclined to believe the IT guys made some kind of tweaks to our proxy yesterday. This is too much!

In closing, I've been able to gain this connectivity using Adium 1.2.5.

If you would like any data files or additional information, just let me know.

Totally stunned...
