Away message too long?

I have two away messages that I use occasionally that are somewhat lengthy. One is 267 characters w/spaces the other is 199 characters w/spaces. 68 characters longer than the other, yet with the shorter message I keep getting the following error:
Away Message Too Long
"The maximum away message length of 4096 bytes has been exceeded. It has been truncated for you."
And yet looking at the message, it hasn't been truncated at all. Can anyone tell my why the shorter of my messages is getting this when the longer one has no issues at all?
