online contacts appear to be offline

A good half my contacts appear greyed out, or "offline," even though these people are online, and can contact me. Any idea of how to fix this?

Do they have themselves set to invisible?

ok - so I found that if I delete the contact from my list, and then add them again, they are asked to 'accept' or 'deny' - and when they 'accept,' they become visible.
the weird thing is that these people were added to my list in the first place because they added me, and *I* was asked to 'accept' or 'deny' and I accepted. but for some reason they remained 'invisible' to me.
so - acceptable work-around found. but kind of annoying nonetheless.

Had the same problem myself a while ago, using the same solution. I *think* it's caused by adding the same contact more than once, the only assumption as to what happens is that adium creates some kind of borked meta contact and displays them offline. Or possibly two online= one off, do they cancel each other out 
?
