File transfer problem, between Adium and iChat.

I've been having a really weird issue for as long as I've known a particular individual who is of the belief that iChat is the greatest piece of software on the planet. I am using a Netgear WNR845T router that my G4 is directly connected to (i.e. not wireless), ports for AIM services are forwarded (it's still just 5190, right? That's what Netgear's help site says to forward) to the G4's IP address, and yet, any time I attempt to make a file transfer to this individual, the transfer never takes place. He bugs me to use iChat, which I'll turn on, then the file transfer functions. This scenario though, has even held true in circumstances when I have set the DMZ to my G4's IP address.

I keep telling this guy that he doesn't have his router set properly for port forwarding, but he is rather adamant in his insistence that iChat's ability to get the transfer working means that my setup is broken or that I don't know what I'm doing with a router--nevermind that Adium never fails to send and receive files to any other user, regardless of what client or platform they may have. In fact it works so well that I never even have to ask about clients, ports, etc. Is there anything in this scenario that I could be overlooking to cause this to happen, or am I going to have to drop to iChat just to make a file transfer every time this git needs something?

It sounds like your router is fine, given that you are able to send and receive files to other people. Generally, router configuration shouldn't even be needed.

What is his router set up? Has he configured port forwarding? If so, maybe that's the problem - he could have it forwarded to the wrong IP, for example.
