Typing notification in message window

It would be useful to display when someone else is typing in the message window, either inline with the text or in the toolbar.

It shows it in the message tab (very bottom of the window), and in your contact list. If you have "Always show tab bar" (in Advanced prefs) turned off, then you won't see any indication in the message window, only in the contact list. There have been requests to have it show the little bubble or whatever with three dots, like iChat does, but I don't know if that will be implemented. Most users, myself included, are happy with seeing it in the little status bubble in the tab.

Well, it wastes screen real estate to show the tab bar if you don't like to display your messages in tabs.
I suppose I could always check out the sources and add it; it doesn't seem like it'd be an especially hard feature to include.

There should be a notification in the window title bar when you don't have a tab bar.

I'm not getting any notification using the Mockie message window style in 0.77.

Well it's certainly there, irrespective of message view, in .8 - I thought it was in .77 to be honest. It's in the window title bar, not in the window itself.

I'm still not seeing it in the contact list, nor in the message window titlebar.
I can see the notification just fine typing to myself in iChat & gaim.

Have you looked through your prefs (specifically, Contact List) to make sure that the "buddy is typing" status is "turned on" and set to a particular color?

Yes, it's set to the Mockie default.

Really? I was under the impression that Adium actually did have the ability to allow message view authors to implement inline typing notifican (a la iChat). I just thought that no one had chosen to do so...
I remember a thread about this awhile back and I'm not sure I was paying an awful lot of attention, so I may be making this all up...

There's work in progress to allow it but it is not possible yet.

State icons (Typing, entered text, new content) display in the tabs by default. If tabs are not visible, they will display in the window title-bar. As Evan said, we're considering support for display of typing status within the message view as a choice for style authors.
Making things confusing, typing notifications do not send immediately in all protocols (sometimes on the 2nd or 3rd IM, or only after the 2nd or 3rd reply), may be disabled or unsupported, and may not work when messaging yourself depending on the protocol being used.
Additionally (in the upcoming 0.8 release) the active status icon pack needs to support typing states and provide icons for these states in order for them to display.
