Contacts on multiple accounts not showing in Contact List

For example: MSN account one has a load of contacts added months ago. Another MSN account is created intended to focus on a handful of these for work stuff, and so a few of the same contacts from account one are added again to the second.
They don't show up unless account one is online - and the Get Info command only shows them as added to account one despite me adding them on 2 and ticking the extra account box. What have i missed?
I should note that when adding completely new contacts and ticking both account boxes during the adding process, they do show up on both.
