Sorry but adium looks way much cooler than proteus and off course it works better as well
Adium screenshots in action :)
Ho-hum:

Shooting for the maximum utility and necessary information with minimum screen use, and the cleanest, most unobtrusive look possible. It's wholly unremarkable and coldly utilitarian, but that was the aim. Color coding, from the top down, is Active --> Idle --> Away --> Away and Idle.
Substitute Lucida Grande with a strikethrough font for a feeling of accomplishment.

My customized Adium setup
First: The pic!

Now, the explanations:
1) As you can tell, I have Adium set up to display a growl notification for all outgoing and incomming messages. This is because I find the growl notifications less obtrusive when multitasking (i.e. always), and I think they look cool
heh.
2) My contact list is a derrivative of mockie using group bubbles (obviously), a black background with 50% transparency (same settings I have for smoke growl notifications) with 5px mockie spacing (again matching the smoke growl notifications).
3) My OS is obviously using shapeshifter to allow theme-ing, and I have the brushed theme running right now.
4) Yes. That *is* firefox. thank's to firefoxy and GrApple and his "brushed pro" theme, Firefox can be made to look very much like Safari.
What do you think?

Thanks!
I also forgot to add that I semi figured out a sneaky way to view own status for each account:
I created a contact list group called "Accounts" and then added all of the accounts I use on Adium to it, giving them aliases (i.e. my AIM account is aliased "AIM" etc.), then, by activating the feature to display away messages, you can intuit the actual state of AIM and ICQ (which will show you as away too yourself even if you are invisible) by inference. AIM with an away icon but no away text naturally implies you are invis, and ICQ's away text *is* "Invisible* (MSN isn't seen because the account correctly appears offline).
As for the background... Andidas has created some of the most gorgeous wallpapers I've ever seen. And believe me, I've seen *many* heh
