Slow file transfer on MSN, Firewall

Hi,

I'm using the fantastic Adium behind a firewall, maybe even two as my router has a firewall and i'm using OS X's built in firewall.

I have opened the ports for msn in both firewalls, ports 6891-6900, and on my router im using 1863 as the trigger port.

Now file sending and receiving works but it seems to be going at very slow speeds. I am capable of getting 55k/sec but it is only transferring at 5k/sec, a 10th of the speed it should be!

Anyone had experience with this sort of problem or know of anything that could be causing it? All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

This is due, to what I believe, the limits that Gaim is capable of.

What exactly is gaim? does it affect MSN Messenger chat? If I use the official msn client everything is ok

gaim is a Linux program, a multi-protocol IM client like Adium. Adium uses some of gaim's protocol code (the code that is used to connect to the IM networks and such; referred to as "libgaim"). So a lot of technical or service-related bugs or issues in Adium, such as file transfer, are dependent on gaim's development progress, rather than on Adium's.

Only certain third-party clients, such as gaim, Proteus, and Adium, use gaim's protocol code. Official clients like MSN Messenger use their own code, and usually have more success with things like file transfer.

Thanks for that explanation Fred.

I wonder, has anyone else acheived faster transfer rates that i'm getting?
