I just purchased an iMac for my daughter who will eventually use it to simply chat with friends using AIM. However, I cannot get AdiumX .7 to install without a checksum error... CRC32

I am operating MAC OSX 10.0 w/128Megs of ram. What else do I need to get Adium up and running for her? It acts like it is installing until this checksum error comes up and says that it is INVALID. HELP PLEASE!

Unfortunately, running os x 10.0 is like running windows 3.1 on a 286. 10.0 is almost considered a alpha or beta of os x, I would highly recommend getting os x 10.2 or 10.3 on the machine if you can.

Adium does not and will never support 10.0. Most applications do not/will not either.

Also, I would recommend maxxing out the ram on that machine. You can look on http://lowendmac.com to see how much ram can go on the machine.

Tip: if you don't mind waiting a couple weeks, the next version of Mac OS X is rumored to be out soon, so I'd hold off on buying a new OS until it comes out. The release date could be announced within a matter of days.

But I agree with The_Tick about the RAM. Get at least another 128 MB in there (so it would be 256 MB total) or, preferably, a total of 512 MB or more.

Tiger probably won't run on the machine that the person posting has, if it is the imac I am thinking of.

I thought each OS X release had actually been showing increasingly better performance on old machines (like iMac G3s)? If Jaguar and Panther would run, then Tiger probably would too, right? Just some features like Core Image of course wouldn't work.

Some machines just aren't supported and the os won't install on them. And/or it's not worth it.

I heard a rumor that built-in firewire will be required for Tiger. Just a rumor, of course.

GREAT!! All I wanted to do was to get my step-daughter off of my computer and onto her own, without spending a small fortune. Now I get what she wanted in the iMac G3-Tangerine and I have to go out and buy a new OS and a boatload of memory? All she does is chat and surf.....and ALL of her friends are using AIM. If I would have known any of this about the OS X version....I never would have considered it. Everybody I talked to said that getting her a Mac with OS 10 would be great for her. So I did....now look what its got me. I'm going to have to spend another $300 US just to get this thing so she can chat to her friends?!? I don't think so! Looks like I got taken to the cleaners on this. I don't think that I will ever consider getting another Mac either. Too frustrating not knowing how to set it up and all. Too used to XP I guess.

i dont know how you got $300, at most im thinking $90
your computer is supported by 10.4 and even if it isnt just run this free application http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/7594 and it will work
even know 128 ram is tiny its more then enough to keep adium running 24/7

oh ya you cant expect a 6 year old computer to work perfectly with more recent things

I have to say that you did buy a new computer in a weird time for apple. Sorry it has caused you so much trouble. In the time you bought that machine, most people where still using OS 9. In fact you can run OS 9 until you get tiger if you want. The standard AIM client will run on it (aim.com). I'm sure it came with your computer, and any of us will be more than happy to tell you anything you need to know about that.

Tiger going to between $70 and $90 and will probably come out in april (10% chance it will be like May). Like Wengero said, 128MB ram is fine, 256MB is better.

Rule of thumb for the future, don't buy the first version of any computer product, hardware or software, mac or pc. And if you ever do buy a new computer, A new mac will open up possibilities with your computer you didn't think of. Thats why we love them.

It's your own fault for buying her a machine without investigating it first. It is not our fault that you bought a machine which did not have an acceptable os for your daughters needs, which you knew beforehand.

The machine you have can run os 10.2 fine. And it's not a boatload of money, you can get a stick of 256 mb ram for pretty cheap now. But in the end it would have been cheaper to get her a used 800 mhz g4 imac off ebay.

The ram was just a suggestion. The os is a requirement for what you need. Do not post again here in this manner. We can give you assistance and recommendations in order to attain your goals, but I will not have you berate us over your poor choices and investigation.
