I moved a buddy over from Adium to iChat so I could use video chat. So I deleted his screen name from Adium. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that Adium would then, without telling me, delete all the logs of that screen name! How is this logical? Trillian does not do this. Would it be such a big deal to simply leave the logs behind or at least ask or warn ahead of time?

The logs were not deleted, open the transcript viewer, they're still there. The contact might have lost his alias in the viewer, though: look for his screen name.
