What is Growl? Why is Adium asking to install it? Why should I use it?

Be sure to put this in not so techie terms. Global notification system doesn't say much. Give examples if you can on things.

Growl is the replacement for the bezels from .77. If you don't know what they were, they showed when someone signed on, off etc. Growl is much more customizable the the old bezel system however, and Growl can be used with different applictions. So it can also tell you when you have new email, or when your track in iTunes changes. Adium offers to install it for you so you don't need to download it off of the Growl site (http://www.growl.info). If you would like pretty on screen notifications then it is recommended that you install Growl.

You can have them come up for anything in the events preferences. In events click on the event you wish to add a growl bubble for (e.x. Contact signs off) then click the plus at the bottom to slide down the sheet that lets you make a new event. Once there chose Growl from the drop down menu. The "Sticky" check box makes the bubble stay up until you click it. Helpful for an initial message.
