What is status? How do I set it?

How do I go invisible? (example, if you can think of more go for it.)

On some protocols, such as AIM, there are only a few specific statuses: Available, Away, Idle, and Invisible. For example, if you're away, you have an "away message" up, which people can view by getting info on you or by messaging you. Or if you're invisible, you appear offline to anyone who has you on their buddy list, but you can still communicate normally with people.

On other protocols, like MSN and Yahoo!, a status can be whatever message you want. For example, "Busy," "At Lunch," "Away," and "Available," are all statuses you can have on MSN or Yahoo!.

In any case, to set your status, click the Status menu and either choose a pre-existing status from the menu, or choose Custom.... Choose the "Custom..." directly below "Available" if you want to still appear available (for example, your status can be "Listening to music" but you can still be available), or the one directly above "Offline" if you want to appear away. If you choose "Custom..." you can pick whether to be invisible or not, and whether or not to send out an auto-response, which is a message that is automatically sent to anyone who messages you. Generally on AIM you will want to use an auto-response, while on MSN and Yahoo! you won't.

If you're online with multiple accounts at the same time, you can set a status for a specific account. To do this, click the Status menu and select the account you wish you set a status for. In the submenu that appears, select your status. If you want to set a single status that will apply to all of your online accounts, just select the status directly from the Status menu, as described.

To create and save new statuses for future use, open the Adium prefs, click on the Status pane, and click the Plus icon on the left side.

[edited to remove mentions of green and red dots]
[edited again to add account-specific status]

may also want to mention the difference between setting one status for all accounts as opposed to separate statuses.
