Does anyone know how to turn off the online/sign on notifications that fill up my screen every time I come back to my laptop...and that annoying NBC sound that is makes every time one of my contacts sign on?

Also are the "special" emoticons downloads viewable by PC users? If they all aren't does anyone know of a group that are?

Go to preferences, go to events, and customize to your heart's content

I went to preferences because I am having the same problem - I just did a search in this forum "turn off sound" and this is the first message that came up and so I followed your advice to go to preferences but I looked around in there and I didn't see a place to turn off sound... I don't want to hear EVERY PERSON!

In Preferences => Events, click the black arrow in front of the event you want to change.
A dropdownmenu appears. Then choose "play sound etc" and click the - (leftunder).
The sound-notification will disappear then.

Okay, I feel stupid now, I finally found it.
