I have a window with 5 conversations in it. How do I close just one?

Alternatively, how do I stop from closing the ones that are not active?

command+W will just close the tab you're in, like any browser with tabs.

In the Advanced -> Messages preferences, under Tabs, there is an option "Allow closing of inactive tabs" which will close tabs not being used. Deselect it.

in your message window you can choose to close each conversation by clicking on the status icon in the lower right corner of each conversation tab. when you hover over the gem it will change into a grey x. clicking that will close the tab with that conversation.

To stop from closing conversations that aren't active open adium prefences and navigate to the advanced pane. once there choose messages and there is an option that is "allow closing of inactive tabs" if this is not selected only the active tab can be closed
