I think it depends what protocol you're using.
The iTunes status certainly works for XMPP/Jabber/Google Talk (and Adium also seems to support the official XMPP way of providing currently listening to info XEP-0118: User Tune but, according to this thread, doesn't support displaying it. I don't know for sure since i've no one to test it with).
I don't *think* it works currently with MSN/WLM because it uses a custom status message and i believe those are what MSN calls Personal Messages and aren't supported in an official release yet (until 1.3b4 comes out anyway). You could always try the UNOFFICIAL release with extra MSN goodness. Information is in this thread.
I could, of course, be entirely wrong in everything i've said here. I'm only an end user after all and my usage is mostly confined to using XMPP.
Post back with what protocol you're using and maybe someone familiar with it will let you know whether it supports custom statuses.
