Asking for Yahoo password (even though it is known)

Post by hugin »

Adium shows a strange behavior. Frequently (once or twice a day) it opens a dialog box asking for my Yahoo password. However, the password is known to Adium, because it is filled already correctly in the text field. Pressing enter logs into Yahoo.

Why do I get this dialog box? There is no other IM account I use where this is the case. Adium does all automatically, except for Adium.

The other strange thing is that this does not happen at log in. (That is, Adium signs into Yahoo automatically without asking for a password.) It only happens from time to time while running.

What is wrong?

A debug log would be helpful in determining what the Yahoo server is sending that makes us think the password is wrong.

For the past two days, every couple of hours, my 2 Yahoo accounts sign out and a password box is displayed. I click and it signs back in. I've got Adium for Mac version 1.3.1. I have several AIM accounts and one Google account logged in but none of these have these problems. It's not a crash. It simply logs out.

I am on the way out the door but I have an rtf file from my debug window that shows the problem here- I think it has to do with yahoo's handling of buddylists but am not sure (and not knowing programming, I could be reading the data very incorrectly!)

When I get back I'll see about uploading it somewhere, this forum wont let me attach .rtf files and the log window had more characters than i can post here in 1 posting. I tried hitting clear every so many minutes until I captured the problem- which took a while, but I did do it (I think).

EDIT- in the mean time its in my geocities page:

http://www.geocities.com/evilshelbydodgeimp/debug.rtf

Hope it helps, will try to submit a formal bug report later but it could be several hours until I return to my computer.

I have no idea how to submit a bug report but this same behavior started approximately 2 days ago. I'm on Yahoo IM constantly via Adium roughly 18 hours a day in the background while running other applications. I noticed intermittently I started getting disconnected from Yahoo, and was not auto-reconnecting as it would if it was bad net, and there was a pop up window lurking behind many tiled windows that was a password prompt box with a check box to 'remember my password'.

Each time I would provide the password and check the box. It would reconnect me fairly quickly over the first 36 hours it seemed until last night maybe midnight - 1am, it stopped doing this. It failed to reconnect quickly. At this point I upgraded to the most recent Adium thinking this might be the issue -- maybe there was an update I needed. I also went to the Yahoo messenger page and validated my IM was working through their web beta interface. It was working fine. By the time my virus scan had validated the Adium upgrade package I *was* able to login to Yahoo IM via Adium but this had taken me some 5-10 minutes to reconnect.

This morning I do not seem able to connect at all. The status on Adium has read (Connecting) for about 15 minutes without success. I apologize for not having already scoured the forum threads for how to do this, but if there's a quick link to point me how to attempt a debugging effort (not something I'm experienced with) I can give it a try.

I've used Adium ever since I've had my MacBook Pro (2.5 years now?) and I'd really prefer to keep with it! But I can't be off Yahoo IM :/ or I'll have folks yelling at me.

Code: Select all

16:15:53: Connection Disconnected: gc=1abe0840 (Unknown error number 0. Logging into the Yahoo! website may fix this.)
16:15:53: -[AIAccount(Abstract) serverReportedInvalidPassword]: <ESPurpleYahooAccount:1884a6b0 5>:PRIVATEDELETED
16:15:53: <ESPurpleYahooAccount:1884a6b0 5>:PRIVATEDELETED accountConnectionReportDisconnect: Unknown error number 0. Logging into the Yahoo! website may fix this.
16:15:53: (Libpurple: account) Disconnecting account 0x15eec6f0
16:15:53: (Libpurple: connection) Disconnecting connection 0x1abe0840
16:15:53: (Libpurple: connection) Deactivating keepalive.
16:15:53: Disconnected: gc=1abe0840
16:15:53: <ESPurpleYahooAccount:1884a6b0 5>:PRIVATEDELETED: Telling the core we disconnected
16:15:53: <ESPurpleYahooAccount:1884a6b0 5>:PRIVATEDELETED: Disconnected ("Incorrect username or password"): Automatically reconnecting immediately
This tells me that libpurple is telling us it's an authentication error, when it's really not:

Code: Select all

	if (reason == PURPLE_CONNECTION_ERROR_AUTHENTICATION_FAILED)
		[self serverReportedInvalidPassword];
is being triggered.

I've made this http://trac.adiumx.com/ticket/11097, but I don't think we need additional information as yet.

Just wanted to mention that mine is doing the same and has for the past few days...

...it's asking for the Yahoo password to reconnect when it is already filled in in the prompt.
I'm... kinda tired... I think I'll go home now.

Yahoo is disconnecting exactly every two hours. I've timed it over the entirety of my football Sunday and 22 minutes into every other hour, down she goes! It does indeed ask for the password, as others have noted, and the saved password works just fine. The timing may coincide with the OS X 10.5.5 release/install, though I can't be certain, as I haven't been paying that much attention. It is perhaps a place to start.

I have been having the same problem as well, and I am still using 10.5.4. I noticed this problem right after the Palin/Yahoo hacked email thing hit the news. Perhaps something yahoo has changed?

Same as all the above. At any rate, it was nice to see this at the top of the forum. I haven't logged on here in years.

BTW, I've yet to update to 10.5.5 as well.

And I think it's Palin's fault too. =-)

I doubt it has anything to do with that. I am having the problem and I am still on 10.4.11.

Interesting.

I have several YIM accounts, and I've been experiencing this issue... all of them randomly logging me out and asking for password.

Code: Select all

16:15:53: <ESPurpleYahooAccount:1884a6b0 5>:PRIVATEDELETED accountConnectionReportDisconnect: Unknown error number 0. Logging into the Yahoo! website may fix this.
I NEVER log into them via the yahoo web site.

This morning, I logged into ONE of them in a browser.

It's looking like this may have fixed the issue for that account. The *other* accounts (that I didn't log into) just disconnected/popped up. The one that I had logged into via web page has stayed connected and has not logged me out (yet).

Adium is disconnecting from Yahoo and refusing to reconnect because of libpurple. Libpurple pings the Y!IM servers too often and to Yahoo this looks like a DoS attack. The official Y!IM client I believe only pings the servers 4 times an hour. Any more then that and the Y!IM servers will ban your IP for some period of time.

The only fix I have found that works so far till a new adium comes out is to disable adium yahoo accounts and use yahoo messenger. Just by having the account enabled on adium bans your ip after purplelib pings the server so many times (as explained in the previous post - I didn't know why it was happening) so even the real messenger wont work for hours after you disable the adium accounts or until you reset your ip address by resetting the dsl modem or by turning your cable modem off for at least 30 minutes to an hour so it can acquire a new address... as a quick reset on a cable modem usually pulls the same ip address it had. The yahoo ban may only last a few hours from the time you are banned so you might be able to simply wait after disabling the adium yahoo accounts. If you have a static ip address then you just have no choice but to to wait till yahoo unbans it, and I have no idea how long that might take. Hopefully the next release will fix the issue and you can simply re-enable them when it does.
