Howdy! New here and have 6 questions re: disconnect/cancel

Post by zannahdoll »

I already made a post asking a question where the answer was already posted just above my eyes... Tired I guess, sometimes you miss the obvious... and I am sure that might be the case again... And I have searched for a few of these questions a little bit but didn't see the answer, so sorry if this is a repost. And some of these questions I didn't look up but I figure I'll just ask all at once - feel free to direct me to other links/threads... Please excuse my ignorance, I'm sure if I did a lot of reading I'd find it all but I'm looking for the easy way out :bitchin:

Here are my questions:
1) Do you need to have the different IMs (google, msn, myspace) loaded along side Adium - is that a prerequisite?

The reason I ask is because I have quite a few different e-mail addresses but I have not been using IM and a friend told me about how great Adium was so I am now trying it out thinking it would be fun to chat with friends and even get work done that way. So I don't have any IM systems loaded pre-adium...

2) And now when I'm in Adium most of the accounts say "disconnect" and a couple say "cancel" --- why is that?

3) is it because other friends are not logged in to that IM so they show in the file menu as disconnect...

Which brings me to a couple other questions -

4) can you only have one e-mail account from each mail service? Meaning if I have two addresses (or more) that are all @gmail.com would only one of those work?

5) Is there a limit as to how many contacts you can have?

Okay; more then a couple -

6) Does MySpace IM just not work? I saw other people with problems with that here too... I don't know if that is Adium or if it is a problem with Safari or Mac... or most likely just MySpace

Thanks for your patience, I'm learning...

4. no, you can add as many accounts per mail-service as you like, for instance 3xMSN, 1xICQ and 2xYahoo
5. Aim seems to have a limit, not sure how much, 200?
6. I don't know

THANK YOU

That helped me get a better basic understanding...

I get the "disconnect" now - it means I am connected and it is offering me the option to disconnect - I think...

So now I still have three questions - two are new ones and the other wasn't answeAred last time...

1) Since there is a limit to contacts and I have over 200 friends on facebook (I have something like 2000, seriously! But not because I know all these people but because I'm using facebook as a networking tool to promote events) --- Anyway, is there a way I can still have my facebook account open through Adium but not include ALL friends - just a select 30 or so?

2) Also about facebook - this is something that has always been true about facebook: if I open a second window then it logs me out of the first window of facebook. So NOW with Adium I notice that every time a new contact even logs in (and I have over 2000 people) it is as if it has opened a new facebook window - and therefore I get logged out and have to log in again every minute! Is there away to have facebook on Adium and still be able to browse my facebook account with out getting kicked out?

3) What's up with MySpace and Adium? That is something I looked up before and I didn't see that anyone had answers...

Thanks again.

New answer to your question nr 5:
From Adium Help: Contact List Limits
Most services allow an unlimited number of contacts. Each individual AIM, ICQ, or MobileMe account can have a maximum of 500 contacts. This limit is set by the AOL servers; Adium itself places no limits.
