contacts in Gtalk no longer showing up - connecting problem?

Hello... did a search but no luck 
I have Adium 1.3.2, running OS 10.5.5, using Firefox and Safari. Up until yesterday I've been using Adium (with Gtalk, and other IM programs) with no problems for years - but now many of my contacts from Gtalk aren't showing up as being online, and don't know if it's a Gtalk thing or an Adium thing or what.
*I'm* showing up as being online, but none of my Gtalk contacts are showing up online, even though I know they're online because they're sitting next to me on the couch and I can seem them online (my friend's got a MacBookPro running Firefox and Gtalk thru' gmail). I've done the basic stuff (i.e. I know I'm online, checked for similar problems online etc.) but no luck. So...
- AIM: Is the problem that Gtalk is using OpenAIM? (from one of the Gtalk help pages: "Note that an AIM account is required to use this feature. AIM in Gmail is not a Google Talk and AIM federation; it's the ability to sign in to your AIM messaging account from Gmail. Gmail uses Open AIM to provide this feature.") At one point I tried the 'view AIM in Gtalk' thing, but turned it off in Gtalk when I started troubleshooting this problem. Adium is the priority here - I don't need to use Gtalk for everything
- Firefox: Is it a Firefox extension problem? I've turned off any problematic extensions, but things still aren't working. Note that I've tried Gtalk with with Safari and still am getting people not showing up.
- Gtalk: I've tried turning Gtalk off and on again in Gmail but that hasn't helped. I read that having an older version of Gmail isn't good, so I'm making sure it's the latest version of Gtalk. I have a bunch of features in GoogleLabs turned on, but that shouldn't be interfering with the contacts, no? Also I've been able to have both Adium and Gtalk open and working - until yesterday.
- Some funky Gtalk server problem: When I try to contact one of the missing people I get a popup with "XMPP Message Error - Message delivery to x failed: (Code 503)" and the message. For what it's worth, I have people who's got x@gmail.com AND x@talk.google.com. I also sent it to the same person via their Yahoo IM name and it went through (it said they weren't online, of course)
I've also deleted any Xtras in Adium but as the help pages, they're style xtras ("a contact list style won't cause message view problems, for example") and am trying to do things on the TroubleshootingTips page but nothing's working. I tried the suggestions here (in the 'Google Talk not connecting' thread - http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic. ... lk#p108804) but no dice.
At this point I just want to get Adium to work because I don't have people who just use IM - and if I have to abandon Gtalk I will. I can post this over on the Gtalk help as well if it sems to be a Gtalk problem - if someone can at least tell me if it's that I'd appreciate it. That XMPP message sounds suspicious. For now, I'm trying Adium first and hopefully someone will see this.
