Latest ICQ versions use UTF-8 for away messages, though It seems, like Adium 0.8b doesn't show that properly. It just treats these messages as some 8-bit strings, which is wrong.
There is a similiar problem for nicknames, but it is not unicode-related. Nicks are stored in 8-bit format, but should use the charset specified in ICQ-accout properties. Currently, all the nicknames are treated as latin-1
