Can you become a lot more verbose on this thought? Tabs look great and are very self explanatory to a lot of people, so a little input from someone who doesn't think this way could go a long way.

I think a drawer for chatrooms would be cool (to list the users in a chatroom), otherwise I like tabs just fine.

Well it isn't a drawer, but it's in the message window…

Since you have the contact list there in the window, how would you know WHO you were having conversations with? And what if the contact list was truncated and you could only see half of your contacts?
I think I explained this earlier, the idea wasn't to have the contact list in the drawer. The drawer (or if you were using an in window panel) would contain a vertical list of the individuals or groups who were involved in a chat with you. IE every chat which would normally be represented by a tab would be a list item. If you are flipping back to the first page mock-up... That means all of those people are currently in a chat (just say for example that many people like me

) plus the same list would display the groupchat as an expandable group which can display group participants on click.
The reason this is better than tabs is because it consolidates what is now two items (the tabs and the groupchat panel) into one. I think I can understand the Tabs take up less room, but there IS a reason I'm suggesting this change, and the tabs take up far more space if you happen to keep amny chats open at once.... think of it 9 chats in tabs means you have to extend the window over that many in length. Whereas the drawer, which can be hidden at the press of a button, can take MANY more without need of expanding.

But what if you get a new message in a chat that's down in the drawer? I mean, you have a list of conversations, it's too long, so there is a little at the bottom that's not visible. How would you know?

Not to be patronizing, but THAT is the kinda stuff I want to talk about. Good question (which is in EVERY way patronizing... so sorry).
The drawer can have a mini scroll bar, firstly, but also it could possibly have a light glow around the edges if there is an out of view message (similar to the way the libraries in iTunes glow yellow when you want to add a play list via drag and drop). It could also optionally order the list in terms of message waiting, though that would be confusing for those who memorize the order of their chats. Which reminds me, it would also make it easy to reorder the chats in whatever way.

OOOO you could also have some some "docked"or bookmarked chats. that is either group or individual chats that you frequently access can be started (opened up) every time you open adium. Of course optional in everyway, so as to stave off pesky pop-ups and things flying around when you start up. This would also be easier acheived with a drawer.

The primary reason I can see for having a drawer is to show the people involved in group chats. This is a fairly major drawback (no pun intended) to the current system; other than that, I'd be a tab man all the way.

But you can see the list of people in a group chat in adium now anyhow.

Only with that tab selected; with a different tab selected you have no visible notification of new messages (I don't think), you certainly don't know who sent them, and you have no idea of the participants. A well-implemented drawer could solve all these issues. Not that I use group chat much at all - but still.
Incidentally, is it intentional that typing notifications aren't shown in a group chat? Well, not in msn group chats, anyway. They used to be...
