Adium: MSN Custom Emoticons

Hi,

I've done some search on this question and surprisingly haven't found any response.

My question is simple: I use Adium and I receive emoticons send from users on my list who use MSN. It's custom emoticons they have added to their MSN. Now I know in MSN you have the option to right-click on these icons to add them to your own MSN application. Is this possible with Adium? I've tried right-clicking on these emoticons, but didn't see the option.

Thank you for your help. =-)

I really think the adium team needs to do something about the *major* lack of proper compatibility with MSN. It is the reason why I dont bother with adium at all.

You are welcome to add it yourself.

Several MSN features were added in 1.3.2, when the dev team went from MSNP12 to MSNP15 - Thats quite a jump. Just because your-most-wanted-feature isn't in there, doesn't mean that MSN isn't taken care of.

Hi!

I also would like the option of adding custom emoticons but meanwhile it will make me happy that my contacts who use MSN in windows could see the emoticons I have available and not just the default ones. It happend to me that I download and install packs but when I use them the other person can't see the emotion, insted see *confused* or whatever the name is.

Do I have to install an extra or something to solve the problem or this problem has no solution for now?

Thanks, nae

Its not one feature, its a LOT of features. Mostly: file transfer speeds, emoticon reliability, avatar reliability and msn nickname reliability. All of these features work poorly. Half my msn list of friends shows up with the butterfly as their avatar. Msn is probably the most used messenger on desktop or laptop computers, and it gets the worst compatibility on Adium. Seriously, the reason why adium isnt as popular as it should be, is because of its poor msn integration. Of all the messenger clients to put the least effort in, the team chose msn. And if they are putting in a lot of effort, its certainly not showing compared to the likes of aMSN.

This topic has been brought up many times but apparently some people still don't realise that Adium developers hardly work on protocol level. "Libpurple", maintained by the developers of Pidgin, is used as a backend.

Nobody there has taken up the difficult task of implementing fast file transfers, yet. Remember that MSN is a closed protocol that needs to be "reverse engineered" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_engineering). Avatars not showing up and missing nicknames would also be a libpurple issue.

Custom emoticon support as originally asked for in this thread is lacking Adium-side. Luckily though, Adium is Open Source and patches are very welcome.

You can't compare Adium to aMSN as it specialises on MSN (apart from the fact that Adium offers a lot more features that are not protocol-specific).

kamil, just imagine where Adium could be if everybody who complains would contribute to the Project! :)

File transfer speeds is way too much work to fix unless someone who really loves to send files on msn fixes it.

Custom emoticons works just fine in libpurple but some work for adium is needed to be able to send them. There is a bug in versions prior to 1.3.3 so that they don't work from wlm 9+ users.

Avatars work 100% afaik, a lot of people claim to have problems with them in Adium but so far noone have been able to prove it with debug logs etc so I don't know what to believe. Nobody complains about them not working in pidgin at least so it might be a Adium bug with some themes or something. There is a nickname bug in 1.3.3 if you set a specific name for your msn account so remove that and use the global one until 1.4 is released.
