Character Counting in new posts.

I'm looking for a way to count characters within new posts. I hunger for that capability so I can easily ensure that I am staying within character limits when sending to an IM to any micro-blogging service such as Twitter. Anyone have a suggestion as to how that can be accomplished by hook or by crook? Thanks.

This has been in since Adium 1.3, but it's only enabled for
twitter@twitter.com on Jabber. This is enabled for the Twitter support coming in 1.4, as well. You'd have to write an admittedly simple plugin to enable it for anything else.

I really was hoping to use this type of capability with Ping.fm, which can be used to update Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Jaiku, Plurk, Identi.ca, etc.

There's still no general-use plugin for this? Hmm. Maybe I'll have to try to write one. It would be handy for sending SMS messages, which is my intended use.
I'm thinking a toolbar icon which shows a running character count for outgoing messages. Any other suggestions?

Not another toolbar icon. Display it inline in the text input.

There's no need to add any extra display code, all you need to do is set a property on the contact to tell Adium to display a count. Check out the twitter counter plugin in the source.
