status messages disappear on auto-away and return

If I have a status message set and then Adium goes on auto-away after inactivity, it seems that the status message disappears. Similarly, if I mark myself as "away" with a status message set, and then I hit the "return" button, it seems that I am marked as "available" but the status message disappears.
The only way I have found to deal with this is to select the status message in the dropdown and manually change the status (i.e. away or available) that is associated with it. But that's cumbersome and doesn't work with auto-away and return.
Is there a better fix to this problem?
