can't receive messages from gtalk contacts

I am not receiving any messages from Gtalk contacts. I see that they are typing but no incoming messages come through. I tried disabling encryption but that didn't solve the problem either. They see my messages just fine.
Communication works fine with other contacts (like MSN, Yahoo). I am running Adium 1.3.3 on OS X 10.5.6
Any suggestions/ideas?
