Adium & Growl

Growl can set (poorly, apparently) the notification settings for Adium.
Which I did.
Now I get tones for events, but no message boxes are appearing any more.
Help!
What I want is this:
1) A ping when a communication comes in (in any way, at any time) or a member comes online (in any way, at any time). I want no other sounds.
2) A message box to appear whenever a communication comes in when Adium is in background, or a member comes online when Adium is in the background. I want no other message boxes.
I've messed about with this for over an hour now; perhaps I should uninstall EVERYTHING and start over? It seems the more I do, the more confused everything gets.
Thanks
William

So, I give up.
Should I rip this baby out of my Mac and re-install, or what?

Your post is 2 hours, 50 minutes old and you give up? Tsk.

Yes, but my frustration is days old.
Tsk.
Robby, your reply didn't help
Do you think I should re-install?
Okay, I am participating and supporting via a donation just completed.
I tried to find a tutorial in the Wiki, but only got miscellaneous stuff when searching for "notifications"
Is there a way I can send messages to myself, rather than bothering my friends trying to get this thing to work?
Okay, the help file said to remove my prefs, which I did. Now all my contacts except 2 have disappeared.
And all my transcripts are gone now.
Great.

Okay, I restored my old prefs and my transcripts and contacts came back.
What now?
How many hours am I supposed to spend trying to set this up?
Can't anyone help me?

First of all, please stop posting several consecutive posts. You can edit posts to add something.

Well, I don't think it's fair to vent that frustration here.

Reinstalling the app hardly ever helps.

That's kind of you.

Yeah, I do think the documentation on events is a bit thin.

Yes, just add your own account as a contact.

Great.
Which help file?
Please tone down your language and show some patience.
Is
http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/GrowlInAdium of any help to you?

The one built-in to Adium under the Help menu in the application.
Yes, I tried that URL hours ago. That page is really thin, and referred me originally to this forum (see my first Adium post)

Hmmm...
I added myself as a contact, and tested, but (of course) there's no way to self-test the application "in the background"...

Okay, for some reason it all seems to be working now.
Perhaps something was corrupted, and unsetting and resetting the various events 50 times eventually hit the right combination.
Sigh.
Thanks for your support, sorry to be so anxious; I've got a very important conference early tomorrow (recession, job loss, etc), and was desperately trying to fix whatever I'd broken before.
