so, you want to put an account onto Adium... go to the prefs, click on accounts, and click the plus sign. It'll walk you through the account-adding process.

Hello all
New adium user here .. moving on from this posters question I have another ..

I have a .Mac account which I have registered and can use to connect in Adium - but my family / friends all have msn account or ICQ accounts .. they are telling me (the msn ones) that my .Mac account does not have a .net passport registered .. what do I have to do to chat with them?
Do tghey need Adium? Do i have to registr with MSN or ICQ instead of using my .Mac account?

I'm sorry if these seem like really daft questions but this is the first time I have ever used anything like this before and someone at work who uses a mac told me that adium just allowed interaction between all types of instantg messenger accounts, hence why I downloaded it :P

please help my newbie brain comprehend all this !

Adium supports all the protocols, but Microsoft and AOL have no idea what .Mac is. You need to set up an account for each protocol you want to use (so yeah, register with MSN and ICQ). Then Adium will work fine with any/all of them at once.

For simplicity's sake just register your .mac email address as a .net passport account, which you will then be able to sign in with. http://www.passport.net

Edit: This will mean you will be able to chat with msn contacts, you still need to register an ICQ account through http://www.icq.com/ in order to chat with them.

You can chat with ICQ contacts from your .Mac account. AIM, .Mac, and ICQ are intercompatible.

Cool! :D , I'd forgotten about that (fairly recent change wasn't it, or have they always been like that...)

Recent depending on the scale of time you've been using 'em :) The merge occurred October, 2002.
