Do you know what specifically about the contacts causes this?

No idea whatsoever. For one, I'm no developer. But, even important, Adium connects to MSN using the "libpurple" library which is developed by the Pidgin project which means that no Adium developer will be directly involved in fixing the bug.

And how this can be resolved in the next version?

We have pointed out that it is a fairly common issue with Adium users so hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

Btw i'd like to thank the creators of adium for making what I think it by far the best IM program to date. It's the most organised, compact, clean looking software, yet runs smoothly and lets you communicate through all types of IM accounts.

If i revert back to 1.3.3 it will finally login for me, but for every version of adium that follows i get the same problem as anyone else.

When i do logon in 1.3.3 i am greeted with the deadly "unable to add user, unknown error (241) I think somehow this is the route to all my problems but i cannot remove this error.

I have deleted all my contact both in Adium and also in MSN messenger and still i have the problem.

I did notice however if i am logged into MSN messenger and i connect Adium, Messenger will say i have logged in at a different location. Adium shows 100% but still cannot be available or show my contact with 1.3.4 and above.

Hope any of this information helps in problem solving

Btw, how do i find the error messages for my contacts? I can't find them using the latest version of adium.

Thing is, no actually error appears, the contact list simply just never appears and adium is constantly trying to connect.
So can i find the debug menu for this?

I didn't realise I needed to install the version of Adium which has the option of reading the Debug information.

Anyway after installing this I realised which contact was causing the issue. I used the official MSN program to delete this user, yet when I tried to log in to Adium again, the debug information acts as if this user is still added to my list. So Adium still stalls at retrieving the buddy list.

I've tried going onto MSN through hotmail to see if this user is still added and it isn't.

So for now i've gone back to Adium version 1.3.3. It's a massive relief this still works. aMSN and the Official MSN program have been driving me nuts.

Is there anything I can do to help this issue get solved in a future update?

I'm still having negative thoughts that this is a pidgin problem.. why would it work in 1.3 but not 1.4+, seems awfully like an Adium problem to me...

Shame, this is good app.. it would be nice to progress along with the updates.

Thank you Adium team... under 1.3.7 all my 241 errors have gone and MSN buddies are back with no errors at all.

There were no MSN changes between 1.3.6 and 1.3.7.

I think i may have skipped over that update... so the fix was probably with 1.6, either way i have a big smile all over my 'chevy chase'

i have had the same issue for over 4 adium versions. it worked for a few in between then went back to this constant 'retreiving buddy list (100%)' no error msgs. the only thing that works is to cancel the log in attempt (after it retrieves the buddy list) and wait a second and re-connect... then it will connect... but if i don't do this it will literally sit there all day attempting. (or if for some reason i loose my internet connect or put my mac book to sleep (thus disconnecting) it will attempt re-connect forever)
i have not added any new contacts in years... nor deleted contacts.. tried reinstall... tried delete and re-add msn account.. neither made any change. msn works fine from a windows xp msn live app.

i'm back to 1.3.3.. this was the last version that worked correctly for me... I get a 241 error which i just close but at least the buddy list accepts and logs me on with this version.

any idea where i can download 1.3.3? last time i backed up a few versions to non-beta every time it opened it insisted on updating -- and then when i finally said ok update dumb thing re-installed the beta.. i think it shouldn't install the beta by default.. cause sometimes you want to use the next 'real' update not the beta...

well dragged the newer beta adium to the trash and installed 1.3.3 verified it says 1.3.3 -- same issue - constantly trying to connect after 100% buddy list - waited min's - no connection successful. cancel - wait a few seconds, retry - connected...
