Equal width versus fit-to-size width for conversation tabs?

Is it determined by the skin whether tabs in a conversation are fit-to-size-of-text versus having relatively equal width?
For example, say I have three friends on Google Talk, and that my tabs look like this:
[Bri x] [Katherine x] [Tommy x]
The first one will have a far smaller clickable area when switching between tabs, and I have to be extra careful not to accidentally hit the (x) button. This is not the case with longer names.
Two questions:
1.) Where in the themes would I adjust the padding to the left and right to increase the minimum clickable area for every name's tab?
2.) Are there plans for future Adium versions to allow equal width tabs (or perhaps minimum widths)?
