Adium says user is available, always

Ever since he upgraded his G5 to a Mac Pro, my hubby's Adium connection often looks like he's available when he's not. Right now, for example, Adium tells me he's available. He's actually out of town, not near a computer, and I know none of the cats have been walking on the keyboard.
Every box in the Status panel of his preferences is checked, including idle after 10 minutes of inactivity; set "Away" after 20 minutes; set "Away" when screen saver is activated.
Yet, at my end, Adium says he's online and reachable. A friend has noticed the same thing (so it's not just me).
What sorts of things could be causing Adium to think a user is available when there have been no keystrokes or mouse clicks for hours?

Really, He's not there!

I'm having the same problem (?)... Mine is that Adium show the contacts as online like all day long but they're actually disconnected. When I send them a message Adium automaticly says "Error has ocurred, contact is not connected/offline" or something like that (I don't remember the exact error text).
This happens in MSN. Then I tried to connect via official Mac Messenger and what a surprise! In my contact list the contacts that were showing online (but actually were disconnected /in Adium) in the MSN they show in the Online List but with the red buddy icon and at the end of the nick name with 'status' as Appear Offline but they aren't as appear offline because you can't send them message both on msn or Adium
So this can be a server-MSN related issue right?

Does this remain an issue?

I am still seeing the same issue as above (buddies showing offline when they are online). This is with 1.4b13 on SL (10.6.1).

Nope. Maybe a temporary Msn-server problem or ISP related stuff. Will report if it happens again.

We've been having this same trouble (with 1.3.7 on Mac OS X 10.4.11). There appears to be a workaround for the user whose client doesn't auto-away when his screen-saver activates: Have the user create a custom status message (I created an Away msg, but I'm not sure it matters). This is under Adium -> Preferences -> Status. You don't even have to use the new custom message - apparently, it just needs to be there.
Does that do the trick?

Actually, I take that back. It's not having a custom status message that does it. Rather, it's just fiddling with Status Preferences .... e.g. merely clicking or unclicking checkbox. Suddenly, Adium will begin to auto-Away correctly. But once the app has been stopped and restarted, the bad behavior resumes.
And the broken behavior continues in 1.3.8 on Snow Leopard.
