Why won't icon change
I am trying to change my icon but no matter what I change it to, the original icon remains. Why won't it change?

What version, and how are you trying to change it?

In the top right corner of the Adium window is a button that lets me change the icon. When I change the icon, it shows me that the new icon is being displayed but the people I am talking to tell me the old icon is actually being displayed.
Then I went to preferences under "Personal" and changed the icon setting to "no icon". The button in the top right corner of my Adium window disappeared but my friends tell me the old icon is still being displayed.
