snow leopard upgrade, sounds break

I just upgraded to SL, and now sounds won't play in Adium and it takes approximately five seconds for messages to be sent or received; I assume some sort of timeout is happening, because if I disable sounds response time is immediate. These are all default sounds, I don't have any Xtras installed, and I have the same problem with both 1.3.10 and 1.4b17. The soundsets are still installed, and if I manually open them up via Finder I can play and hear all of them just fine, so this isn't a general audio issue. If I try to manage sounds inside Preferences, I don't get a preview of the sound. I don't see anything in the console when sending or receiving messages, is there anywhere else I can look?

Problem was apparently related to Bluetooth; even though I wasn't using a headset for output, and all of my other system sounds played through the internal speakers as expected, I removed the BT headset I had configured and everything with Adium went back to normal.
