as the topic subject reads, it would be useful if people could preview the sounds before downloading. i often download sounds that i dont like and then have to delete them. so this would solve the problem
i dont know how much a job like this kind would require, but i just thought it was a cool idea and were interested to know what the site dev thinks.

I think it's quite impossible...
I think it'll we very hard to make a preview for each sound.
And not very useful. Sound Sets aren't very heavy, you can DL them easily. So, my advice is: DL the sound set, open it with ctrl+clic, listen each sound with QT (by ex.). And after, if you like it, use it with
Adium.
I have a second advice: if you don't like an Xtra, rate it and comment it!

Well it *would* be theorically possible if they weren't compressed...
Too bad.

Well, you can post preview images. It would be a nice touch if you could post a short preview sound instead.

Sounds are short, by definition... so how do you do to make a preview of something which is short???
A sound set for
Adium has 8 sounds. Do you want a preview or ear each one before DL???
I think the easiest way is to DL the Sound Set and do just like I said above.

By the same logic, there's no point in a preview of a contact list style...

Not wanting to knock your point, bld, because I can see why you think that. But I am of the opinion that if this could be achieved - and for someone who knows php, I would have expected it would be fairly straightforward to kludge together an alteration to the image preview code - it would be very cool. I know a little, but not enough to know where to begin on what must be a pretty huge system.

it is fairly easy to do, now must be seen if they want to do it.
if it's implemented, it means the user has to go and convert a sound to mp3; then post it online.
When the page loads you'd get this little boxes that play.
I think it's a nice idea, but it's a weird concept. Never saw something like that and I don't really know what the effects will be.
The neatest would be all sounds in one mp3; but that's a little bit too much I guess.

I'm not against the idea to be able to listen sounds before DL the Sound Set.
I'm often disappointed by Sound Sets (that's why I make my own ones

).
But the problem is I think this solution is worse than the problem. I used to go on websites to find my sounds, and I know it's quite boring to preview sounds like that.
To make a preview (not necessarily in MP3, it's fine for every format that QT can read) for each sound of the Sound Set, you will have to do the work in double. That's not the worst point BUT it means you will use the double of memory on the server! I don't know if it's a good idea, financially...
