the previous build (1.3.10 i believe) my icons worked no problem. But now in 1.4 i CAN set icons via:

1. ADIUM -> PREFERENCES -> PERSONAL: choose icon

&

2. ADIUM -> PREFERENCES -> ACCOUNTS -> HIGHLIGHT MY SCREEN NAME -> EDIT -> PERSONAL: choose icon

I can see them on my screen, but when i look at my buddy list then my SN it shows the aim logo on it.

It takes some time for the icon to propagate to all your recipients I believe. You should check again.

i did, its still shows nothing.

I've been having a similar issue. It allowed me to set my icon, but now if I change it again it isn't reflected in my contact list. It does show in messages, but I don't see the icons for some people that I talk to.

I cannot reproduce this issue. I just checked and was able to set the icon.

Here's what I figured out today that fixed this for me, might give it a try.

The picture I wanted to use for my icon was on my desktop and called simply "icon". It didn't show the extension (even though it was .png and opened in preview). I changed the name to icon.png (aka, just added the extension onto the name). Then I uploaded it again onto AIM and it worked.

I doubt this is the only thing causing people problems, but if your picture doesn't show the extension in the name you might give this a try.

have you tried aiming yourself or asking your friends to see if you have an icon / checking your screen name on the buddy list? i tried everythig for bout an hour then i just gave up.

here is a screenshot showing that i have no icon.

Top right shows the icon i selected. i highlighted my SN and left a little space on the buddy list side to show you that there is no icon for me on my buddylist (i added myself to see if i had an icon). i AIM myself to check if i got an icon. the first person sending the msg is me. then it is replying back to itself and shows no icon.

wow that was really weird.. i tried it your way. copying the picture then pasting it onto desktop. then i noticed the picture name was .jpeg, changed it to .jpg and it worked. now all the icons i pick works. very weird.

edit2; seems like my little brother cannot view my icon (he is in windows AIM) nor can my other friend. even though i see it on my list.

so basically it does not appear in the chat, but appears in the buddy list and chat notifications. (she is on windows aim)

bump. i think it is windows aim that cannot see the icon.

I have the same issue. I figured out a work around though. If you login to http://lifestream.aol.com and click on your default pic on the top right of the page, click edit, then it will ask you to upload a file from your computer, do that, then it will stick on the AOL network, and you'll see it on other AIM clients as well.

It's worked for me anyway.

I have tried all of the above ways and nothing worked. I dragged the icon to my desktop, made sure that it ended in .jpg with it being visible, then tried putting it in Adium and it didn't work. I tried both the select file method, then the drag to the icon selection place method and neither worked.
I then logged into the lifestream on AIM and attempted to upload my Icon there. It shows up there, but not on Adium.
None of my contact's icons show up either.
I have also had this issue for a long while now. I don't remember it working for over six months.
I've even reinstalled adium and got a new computer over this time as well
I'm running Snow Leopard, I think that might be it...

*EDIT*

If I go to lifestream, then upload my picture, it will display until I log into Adium. When I log into Adium then refresh lifestream, the icon on lifestream just goes back to the default icon, just like the one on Adium does.

The icon on lifestream will stay as the icon that I selected as long as I do not log into Adium. I think adium is overwriting it.
