Adium stealing irc:// links

Hi there,
Recently i discovered that Adium has taken over irc:// links on my machine, despite the fact that i do not use — and have never used — Adium for IRC. I searched Preferences to try to disable this, and the only thing i could find that seemed related was Advanced > Default Client. However, Adium is NOT listed as the default IRC client. FWIW, that line is simply blank — and i can not select another client, the list doesn't drop down. Unticking 'Always set Adium as the default' and just leaving the line blank didn't seem to make any difference.
Am i doing something wrong? Or is this a bug?
configuration:
OS version: OS X 10.6.4
Adium version: 1.4.1
other IRC clients installed: Linkinus and Textual
