This is happening a lot lately... Today I added someone (he added me, because I'm also getting the current error about invalid e-mail addresses when adding people) and they were showing as offline. I've got a few other friends that just always show in offline and I have to force them to show up anyway (I've got "Hide Offline" turned on.

It's very frustrating, and I figured I'd mention it as it's kind of an expected feature for an IM client to able to accurately show status Is anyone else having this issue? Anyone have a proposed solution? I swear I fixed this once, but I can't remember what I did... Lame.

I'm having the same problem. This doesn't happen to people I've had in my list for a long time, only happens with people I recently added. And that is, from time to time, they are shown as offline even if they are there. And even if they write to me, I still see them as offline.

Guys I had the same problem.
Downgrade your adium to a recent release.. I had 1.3.6 something like that.. It has some bugs occasionally, but it's good for now.
Add and or cancel adding other people.. it will sometimes crash but it will get back up.
Version 1.4 seem to also have the problem, I know version 1.3.6 doesn't have that bug, try it.

OP here. I found a workaround:

Install Microsoft Messenger (I'm on a Mac) and load that up. For me, when it loaded up, I started getting Add Requests from the contacts who were behaving oddly on Adium. I "confirmed" those requests, and they appeared online in Microsoft Messenger. Then I loaded Adium back up, and they were online there, too. So basically Adium can't handle whatever new system is in place for adding/requesting new contacts on the MSN protocol... If you add or re-add contacts through the real MSN client (whatever your platform may be), it might fix it for them.

Still, this is a workaround. This bug is quite huge, I'd say... I have no idea why it's gotten so little attention. I guess it's not prevalent, but I'm on the latest version of Adium and using OS X Snow Leopard. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation...

I was having the same problem. Some friends who added me recently always showed offline.

I'm running Adium 1.4.1 on Snow Leopard.

After reading this thread I installed microsoft's msn client for mac 8.0 and when I logged in I got a ton of requests for adding me. Most spammers probably, but some were from my friends who added me recently.

When my friends added me I got the popup windows asking if I authorized them. I accepted and added them to my list. I didn't get any error message. Apparently my friends were able to see me online, but always showed offline to me, even when chatting with me.

After logging from MS's msn client once and confirming (again) my friend's requests there I then logged in again from Adium and now I can see them online.

I couldn't find any ticket about this issue, shall I create a new one?

Yeah, creating a new one would be a good idea for sure! I wonder why it's only a few people who're affected...? Mysterious...

Unfortunately, the issue resides in libpurple. It has finally received some attention from the Pidgin developers: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/13068 so we're hoping this gets fixed in the nearer future.

The same frustrating problem happens with me also. The surprising part is it only happens with the new contacts. After passing some time, it automatically starts showing the real result. Not only for contact, if you notice, after sending messages, it shows offline for both. This problem is only with the newer version, earlier I was not facing such issues. I am planning to go back to the earlier version. Any solution on this will be very helpful.
