Possible Bug: file system freeze on i7 MBP

I'm not sure still what's been causing it but through an elimination diet I'm suspecting that Adium 1.4.1 may be causing my "sandy bridge" i7 Macbook Pro's file system to intermittently become completely unavailable.

I'll be going along just fine for hours, sometimes days, and then suddenly an app will start going beachball. I can switch to other apps and do anything I want in memory—but if I do any application action that requires IO from the file system then that app will freeze in a beachball too. So far there's been no way out besides hard restart. The only good thing is that I don't appear to need to worry about file corruption because my system loses all ability to access the hard drive.

Since this is not a workable way to use my new computer, I've been not running various pieces of software to see if I can isolate the problem. I haven't determined if Adium is the culprit but so far it's one of the apps I've kept from running while my computer has been running okay. Two other things I've kept off are atMonitor and Yahoo Widgets.

I can't recreate the problem because I don't know if it's related to anything I'm doing. The timing and the conditions appear to be random. The only solid data point I have is that this never happened on my non-sandy-bridge i7 MBP or my Core2Duo MBP with the same system. The only other data point I have is that I haven't had the freeze since SO FAR since not running the previously mentioned software.

Either way I felt I should write a post in case anyone else might be having the same issue.
